Start early . ... save Time & Money!

Springtime is the best time to get your garden in high gear ! Prevent weeds before they even sprout!!  Here are some key steps:

Corn Gluten Corn Gluten

1.    Apply a pre-emergent

  • Pre-emergent sterilizes most seedlings before they sprout.

Corn gluten is a natural pre-em is & available @ feed stores or nurseries.

The average Pre-em last 30-45 days. Other less organic forms are sold.

      * Tip:  Buy one that is suitable for beds & lawn.

2.   Pull or spray weeds as they emerge.... (preventing new seeds)

  • Post-emergent herbicides kill existing weeds.
  • Pulling, mulching or preventing with pre -em is a healthier alternative.

    - But...if you decide that spraying your weeds is the only way out....

*Tip: Use a little dish soap diluted into the herdicide

to help the herbicide stick to the foilage.

Apply only a small amount, re-apply

after one week if still alive.

3.   Spread mulch

  • Mulch helps retains moisture, suppress weeds & beautifies your beds.
  • Colors & texture range. Finer mulch decompose better for healthy soil.
  • Cedar & Cypress deter bugs.

  • Some mulch like bark, may float during heavy rain.

2 -3 inches works best taking care not to cover plants or

tree trunks as this may cause fungus

*Tip: Try using living mulch which already has compost mixed in.

  4.   Check your sprinkler system

  • Make sure your system works & covers all planted or grass areas. Don't water concrete or the street....conserve!
  • Watering in the morning greatly reduces fungus. Your grass does not benefit from continuously being moist.
  • Water less! Most soils need regular watering, not a lot at once. Grass does not have deep roots and does not need a "natural rainfall".

5.  Add Compost or Plant food

  •   Strengthen your roots early & improve soil

condition.

           Don't wait until it's hot.

Even a few bags of compost will help green & feed your plants & grass

5. Greener Greens & Deeper Colors with Ironite

  • Ironite is a wonderful supplement to your soil. It will deepen the colors of your grass, flowes & trees. When you have yellow leaves, Iron usually greens it back to health. It is available at most home & Garden outlets  in both Granular & liquid forms.

*Tip: Be sure to clean of all walkways, patios & driveways after application as Ironite can cause "rust" stains!
