More great Lawn tips for spring!
Rake & clean!!
Around February to March is when Live Oaks drop all their leaves at once to give us a reminder of what fall felt like. It is important to rake/blow out beds before mulching as it will save you on material. Don't forget to do the same with your grass! Using a thatching rake helps remove dead grass making for a healthy lawn.
Check sprinkler system
Have your system checked before you find out what it lacks. If you adjust & replace your heads, check for clogged nozzles or leaks now, you wont have replace grass during hot summer..
Top dress with compost
If you really love gardening naturally, this does wonders for lawns & beds! Make sure you put it down before summer gets hot or you might burn your grass. Water it in to boost soil health, tilth (crumblyness) & green up the grass.
Pre Emergent...Corn Gluten
Apply a pre-emergent
- Pre-emergent sterilizes most seedlings before they sprout.
- Corn gluten is a natural pre-em available @ feed stores or nurseries.
- The average Pre-em last 30-45 days. Other less organic forms are sold.
* Tip: Buy one that is suitable for beds & lawn.
Aerate compact lawn
If your soil is hard or compact, water doesn't penetrate and necassary nutrients dont either. In essence, water is wasted. In the past aerating was done with a garden fork. Today we have Aerators that remove plugs loosening up soil.
